Another great week in Grade 1!
This week, Cranston school had a special guest perform Monday. His name is Michael Mitchel and students know most of his songs now. We had a great time drawing story maps and retelling Little Red Riding Hood. Next week will be working on retelling other familiar stories. We have also begun a new set of math centres that are focused on 2-D and 3-D shapes, ask your child if they see 3-D shapes at home. Most students have completed their animal research books! The week finished with club Friday, which was very fun. Only one more club Friday left (June 21).
Next week, we will begin building a model Calgary in our classroom, so if you have any cardboard recycling that you can send in, that will be great. We also have our FIELD TRIP to Leighton Art Centre on Tuesday. Please pack a drink and a litter-less lunch as there is nowhere to dispose of it there! We will also be going outside so, comfortable shoes are a must.

Next week is the last week of Alien Inline skating. Brace’s students go on Monday and McIntosh’s go on Tuesday. Boys and girls have been doing an amazing job of showing our class motto: “I CAN TRY!”. We will go back to a regular gym schedule starting the following week.
Permission forms have gone home for our upcoming trip to the Leighton Art Centre (June 11). For this trip there is no room on the bus for volunteers, you will need to arrange transportation there and back. If you are able to volunteer please let us know. We will give parents who have not been on a fieldtrip this year a chance to come but we will still need 2 per class. Thanks to all who have helped out this year, we hope you enjoyed the volunteer tea last week!

Hi Parents
It sure has been a busy exciting month. We were involved in many building activities. We built the 3 houses of the
3 little pigs – the straw house, the stick house and a recycled (brick) house. We built bridges using different materials and
we build two towers as well.
As architects and engineers we learned so many things such as:
- spaghetti is not a very strong material
- a triangle is a strong building shape
- a house needs a strong foundation, walls that are the same size and a roof
*Thank you so very much for sending in a variety of materials for us to explore with, we had so much fun.
We will be using our knowledge to build a community soon and would appreciate it if you could send any empty boxes
that you may have from crackers, Kraft dinner, cereal, etc.
We have begun our science study of the needs of plants and animals. We had a wonderful trip to the zoo and have started
to research an animal that we are interested in. Thank you very much to the parents who were able to join us at the zoo.
We have also begun our scientific experiment with plants and are very excited to see how close we are with our predictions.
We planted bean seeds but we chose to try different environment for our seeds:
- soil, water, and sunlight
-soil, water and no light
-water and sunlight
- water and no sunlight
-sunlight, no water or soil
In math we are continuing to play a variety of addition and subtraction games to build our skills.
We are really enjoying our in-line skating ! ☺
Did you know there are only 29 days left of grade one?

5 senses and Building
Hi Parents!
This week was an exciting week of learning. We have been focused on our 5 senses and how each one of them support each other to help us experience the world!
We have done smell tests and tried to guess smells without being able to see the items! We were able to have one of our visually impaired students share their world with us and explain how we experiences his day when he learns. We also got to do taste testing!!!
Our sense are so important and we've certainly realized that each one helps the other one out and when one is missing the others take charge to help you out!!!
Later this week we started using the wonderful materials you all shared with us!! We made plans and created structures with different items! We look forward to continue building and experimenting.
Reminders
Monday April 15 is spring picture day.
There is no school Thursday and Friday this week and Monday next week!! Parent teacher interviews are Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. They will be student led with a window of time available to talk with your child's teacher.

Spring break times
Hi Parents!!!
Well it's better late than never, sorry for the late post!!
Our week before break was exciting! Mr. Scout came to our room and taught us how to make Bannock. We watched him mix the ingredients and we all got an opportunity to knead and make our own bannock piece. When he fried them in oil, we were able to go watch and see how the bread changed!
When it was done, we enjoyed some peppermint tea and our bannock. We all tried our meals and loved experiencing something new!!
We started the season of Spring before we left!! We had a great conversation about all the things we want to do now that the weather is changing! As well as all the changes we will begin to see in nature!
We have really been working on our writing and set some new goals. We wrote about what we would like to do on break and then spoke with the teachers about what things we could do to improve our writing and what things we wanted help with.
Things are going to get really busy when we get back from break!
Reminders:
Please let us know about where your family is from! We sent a sheet home before break and want to know where all our families might have come from. We have a big world map that we will pin our places too.
We will also start building our communities. Please bring items that are needed in the email that was sent home!
Hope you are all enjoying your break!! Sorry the post is late!

Artifacts, Art and Storytelling
Hi Parents!!
What a fun and exciting week we had.
Thank you to all of those that have brought artifacts from the past to share. We have explored old cameras and learned how film was used and how we just "couldn't see the picture" until it was developed. We saw typewriters, phones - (did you know you used to have to turn a dial to make a phone call?) irons and even an Apple 2 computer!!!
As we continue to explore the past, we created a beautiful art project using plasticine! We got to choose what kind of landscape we wanted to create. They turned out beautifully!!
We were honoured to have Mr. Scout in our class this week to tell us the story of Napi and The Rock. We learned how stories are passed on from generation to generation. Ask me to tell you the story about how the rock in Okotoks got there!
We learned a reading strategy for when two vowels are together in a word. "When two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking and says its name." Words such as 'soap', 'eat', 'ear', 'rain' ......
This strategy helps use to read these words properly because sounding each vowel out won't work! Help me use it at home!
List #5 of my popcorn words came home last week! Please help me practice them!
We continue to work on subtraction in math and have been using various strategies to help support our learning. Counting backwards, using fingers, manipulatives just to name a few. Our math centres have helped reinforce our learning and helped us to use our strategies!
REMINDERS
We are swimming next week! Please make sure your child has a towel, bathing suit and other items they need. We will not have time to shower and shampoo hair so please do not send any of those items. Your child will need to be independent in dressing themselves and be responsible for their items. We will have some parent volunteers to support.

Fort Calgary and living in the past!
Hi Parents!
What a great week last week!! Our trip to Fort Calgary was amazing!
We learned about how people dressed, the peoples that were Indigenous to Calgary and how the settlers and NWMP made there home here as well. We were able to touch artifacts from the early 1900's. What toys kids played with, what household items looked like as well as what the NWMPolice used to keep people safe. We also learned about Sod Houses that the settlers made looked like and why they used Sod for their roofs. As well as how the Indigenous lived in teepees and moved to follow the Buffalo.
Ask me who took care of the teepee and what did I build using team work!
In math we started working on Subtraction. We are learning different strategies to help us understand how to make a number smaller. We can count backwards, use counters and sometimes our fingers work too! Subtraction can be a tricky concept, so we will continue to practice and develop ways that work for all of us to understand it!!
We have been developing our writing and working on capitals, lowercase and starting to use punctuation. We realize that using finger spaces really make it easier to read our work and most of us are using them consistently. Over the next while we will be making sure that our popcorn words are spelled correctly by using our word wall and editing our work. We are also working on explaining the 'WHY' when making a statement such as 'I like to play __________ because_____'
Help me at home by practicing printing my popcorn words as well as reading them!
Reminders
Swimming is the week of March 11-14.

February is here!
Hi Parents!
First of all, my apologies for missing the last blogs!!!!
The new year is in full swing!! We have a lot of things happening in February and March. Many forms have gone home, please ensure that you send them all back in ASAP if you haven't already!
Over the last week we have been working on how to describe a character in a story. What features do they have, what do they look like and how to they act and feel inside. We read the Paper Bag Princess and worked on describing the Princess and the Dragon in our writing journal as well as Moira from the book Moira's birthday. We are getting much better at understanding how we need many ideas to describe a character and put that to work, by beginning to create our own! We have started the planning stages and made sure we add all the features we need to so that our words match our drawings! Next week we will put all our ideas together to write about our created character!
Tech day was a huge success! We got to use our dash and dot robots as well as code with the ipads. We had fun working with Ms Redwoods class.
In gym we started hockey!! We have learned how to use sticks safely and pass the puck to a partner. Friday we got to play small games! It was a lot of fun.
We had a great time celebrating CHINESE NEW YEAR!! It is the year of the PIG! We made Dragon masks, talked about the Zodiac, had rice and made Chinese lanterns.
Much of January and February we have focused on WINTER. Reading lots of good books, coming up with ideas about "I know it's winter when" and writing them down. This week we started a winter tree project using paper.
Reminders
Fort Calgary is Feb 20!!
100's day and Valentines exchange will be on Feb 13
Please hand in forms for Swimming and Fort Calgary ASAP

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
Hi Parents!!
What a great week back. It was so nice to see so many fresh and rested faces after the break. We were all ready and raring to go!!!
Our new year saw us introduce new Literacy and Math centres this week. We are working on developing our writing and learning about word families and how they help us spell. In math we are working on addition and reinforcing numeracy to 20.
We started working on Community and the different places we can consider a community where we belong. Our highlight of the week was learning all the places that are in our Cranston Community and how we all have 2 things in common in our class. We all live and go to school in the same community. We used Google Earth to help us understand how our big our community is and we even used it to find our houses! It was fun to see how close we all are to each other!
Swimming
This week we got our swimming dates. We will be swimming at Canyon Meadows pool sometime in March. We will send out our times to parents in an email. We are looking for parents to help in the dressing rooms, in particular we will need DAD's!! Please make a note and look for an email shortly.
Reminders
Home reading is still being switched daily. We have all made so much progress.
We also sent out list 3 of our Popcorn words. Please continue practicing! Putting stickies around the house with the words on them and asking your child to find them is a fun way to learn!
Our Residency for Gymnastics is starting this week. Reminders to have girls hair tied back, no frilly or flowing tops or dresses as well as small studs in the ears so they don't catch on clothes.

Christmas Time!!!
Hi Parent's!!
What a great week to start off the fun and excitement of the holidays!!
Our Christamas concert was a HUGE success. The students worked hard learning their songs and actions and were amazing!
Thank you to all the families who brought items in for our Christmas bags. We spent the week decorating the bags and filling the with items for students in Grade 1 that may not be getting much.
We know that animals adapt to colder weather, but how do we adapt in Calgary? We came up with a lot of different ways!!
Our math and literacy centres are always part of our day! We started our special project to share with you in the Assembly we are hosting on DEC 21!!!
Rainbow day was a big success! We had so many colours on and used our math skills to find out which colour was the most popular. BLUE was the winner!
Reminders
Report cards go home Wednesday December 19th
Assembly will be Friday Dec 21 at 9:15. Parents are welcome to come watch. We will be sharing our learning as well as students from around the school.
Club Friday is also on the same Friday and school will go until 11:45 as usual.

Week of December 7!
Hi Mom and Dad!
The month of December is in full swing and as always is a busy one!!!
This week we had the opportunity to see the Kinders perform their Christmas concert and we have been working hard practicing our own songs!
We did a fun writing activity with the book "I Don't Want to be a Frog!". The frog wanted to be every animal but the one he was. We were able to choose what animals we wanted to be and reasons or characteristics about why would couldn't be that animal. There was a lot of great animals we came up with!
We have been working on how animals get ready for the winter and the changes they make. Whether they Hibernate, Migrate or Adapt, animals all do something! We've done a good job brainstorming animals and researching what animals do what!
On Thursday we worked with our Buddy Class and created our "Christmas Sweaters" out of paper. In honour of Christmas sweater day on Monday, they are hanging on the bulletin board in the HUB!
Reminders
Items for our Christmas bags are due tomorrrow!! We're hoping as many people as possible can help support some students who may not receive gifts this season.
Christmas concert is Thursday December 13 at 6:30pm. Our afternoon dress rehearsal will be at 1pm on Thursday. No tickets are required for that.
Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

Week of November 30th
Hi Mom and Dad,
Our Hip Hop dance residency was this week! We had an amazing time with our instructors and put on a great show for our audience. Sound Kreations did a wonderful job. Look for their link in the weekly update!!
We continue to work on our literacy centres, creating story with stop motion, writing letters to others and making words.
We read the book My Many Coloured Days by Dr. Suess. In the book it talked about colours representing our feelings. After, we did some writing about how colours make them feel.
In Math centres, we continue to work on number sense, ordering numbers, playing race to 50 and other fun games!!
In science we are working on the colour wheel and created some cool mixing jars. We added oil and water to 2 primary colours of our choice. When we shake it it makes the secondary colour! Ask me how we created the jars to get them to work and what colour I chose to make! We also did a cool experiment that used plastic cups and paper towel. Ask me to tell you about it!
Reminders!!
Our Christmas concert is Thursday December 13th at 6:30. The afternoon dress rehearsal will be at 1pm in the afternoon. More information to follow later!
We are really improving at reading!! Please continue to do your Home Reading every day!! As well as popcorn words.
Please start bringing in items for our Christmas Socks if you are able to paricipate!! We appreciate it!!

Colours, Colours Everywhere!
Hi Mom and Dad!
We spent this week exploring Primary and Secondary colours. Ask me which colours are which!!
Mixing colours was a favourite part of the week. We got to paint our hands with primary colours and mix them with a friend! We read the books Little Blue and Little Yellows, Harold and the Purple crayon and the Day the Crayons Quit!
Our blends of the week we learned were CH and TH! Knowing these blends help us when spelling! Did you know that TH can make 2 different sounds? Ask me what they are.
We finished our first round of literacy centres!! Working with groups and focusing on letter sounds and recognition have helped us in our reading and writing. Our next round of centres will start this week! We will be focusing on word work and guided reading.
Math Night was a great success. Thank you to all that came out to play and learn new math games. All the games that were shown can easily be played at home!! We showcased our Show Me and Number bingo games. Ask me to explain them to you, they are part of our current math centres!
Friday was a fun day!! We learned out to use stop motion animation with the ipads. Using some plastecine, we focused on using small movements and taking pictures to make a small story. We will start using this technology to tell stories in our literacy centres. We had a lot of fun!!!
Reminders
Library day is on Mondays - please remember to bring your library book back to school to take out a new one!
Popcorn words are finally posted on the side bar of the blog. Let us know if you need another sheet!
Thank you to all that have been bringing in their home reading regularly! We love reading with the kids everyday and seeing how much they have progressed!
Clubs will be this Thursday as we do not have school on Friday!!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Remembrance Day
Hi Mom and Dad,
This week we talk a lot about Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those that fought and kept the peace so that we are able to live in a peaceful country. We read the Todd Parr book 'Peace is..." and "A Poppy is to Remember". For our assembly on Friday, we created a wreath of poppies and wrote a message of peace on a paper poppy. Our assembly on Friday was a wonderful way to end the week, reflecting on how others made sacrifices.
Letters Y, Q, X, Z, E and Blend 'SH'
We finished our letter work this week, finishing it off with the last vowel E! We love being able to use our knowledge of letters sounds to spell small words and sometimes words up to 5 letters long!!! After we finished the alphabet we started to work on letter blends starting with SH. We will continue to explore more blends to help us in our reading and writing.
We started a new round of Math Centres this week! This round we are focusing on number sense to 10. Ask me what centre I did on Friday!
POPCORN WORDS AND HOME READING
Parents, it is very important that your child is practicing their popcorn words and doing their home reading daily. Both activities help with their writing at school and allow them to explore new books and become more confident in themselves. Please have your child bring their Home Reading books back to school every day, unlike kindergarten, in grade one we are reading and exchanging your child's book daily to give them exposure to different text.
Reminders
Math night is Thursday November 15th from 6 -7 pm. We will be showcasing many different games and ways to help your child with math concepts we are working on. There will also be a bake sale run during this time.
There is school tomorrow Monday November 12.
Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend :)

Halloween extravaganza!!!
Happy weekend parents!!
I apologize for no blog last week!!! Apparently the week got away from me!
This week was full of fun and frivolity!!
We worked on the letters H, J, V and U!! Were are getting close to the end and then will work on blends!!
We had fun writing about about our Halloween experiences, working with our pumpkins and using them in different math scenarios.
Our math and literacy centres have been a hit! We have been working so hard at becoming confident with letter sounds and popcorn words and working on patterns, sorting and number. Stay tuned, some new centres will be coming shortly!
We ended our week talking about Remembrance Day. This will be a large focus of our next week with our assembly happening on Friday.
Reminders
Popcorn words went home at parent teachers. If you have lost your list look to the side page of the blog for our new words!!
Please continue with your home reading! The more you practice at home and exchange your book when reading with the teacher the better you will get!!

Fall is finally here!!
Happy weekend!!
Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful Fall weather!
We were able to take advantage of it and go on our Fall community walk this week. We payed close attention to what we saw, heard, felt and smelled! Even though most of the leaves have fallen off the trees, we were still able to admire the beauty of colour from our view at the ridge. At the end of our walk we found and area of grass will lots of leaves! Time to feel, crunch and throw them in the air! It was a wonderful time.
This week we worked on the letters L, P, O and G! Since we now have 2 vowel sounds, we are learning that we are able to spell even more small words!
We are getting really good at our POPCORN words. Parents, we encourage you to continue working with your child at home. These words will be a foundation of your child's reading and writing skills. Next week at interviews we will get a new list!!
Our math centres continue to engage us in reinforcing our sorting, patterning, and number skills. We have had a chance to go through 4 of our 10 rounds so far. Ask me what my favourite station is so far!
In writing we are learning about what happens First, Next and Last in a story. We read many "If you give a ......" stories to show students how many things happen in a story and in some they come full circle!
CLUB FRIDAY was this week. Students had an amazing time and were very independent in getting to and from their club. Ask me what I liked best about my club!
Reminders
Parent teacher conferences are Thursday evening and Friday morning. If you haven't booked an interview there is still time!!
Home Reading is an important program for your child. Please read with your child daily and use the sheet we sent home to help you with the ways you can support your child.
Parents, we could use more volunteers to do home reading. Spots open are Wednesdays or Fridays. Please sign up in you can! It usually only takes an hour of your time any time of the day!!

Home reading begins!
Hi Mom and Dad!!
We enjoyed sharing all
about our Thanksgiving weekend this week.
We sure do all have a lot to be thankful for!
This week we continue
to work on isolating letter sounds. We
added letter ‘a’, our first vowel. This
will help us begin to spell many words during our writing time and help us with
our reading. The letter A looks like we
are biting in to an apple, with a big wide mouth.
We also introduced the
letter ‘R’ and did a really good brainstorming words that begin with this
letter sound.
In math we continue to
work on different ways of showing numbers.
We have also begun working on math centres to reinforce our
learning! Each day we get to do a new
centre, patterning, sorting, and working with numbers. Ask me what my favourite centre is so far.
Home reading started
this week!! We made special reading
sticks to stay in our bags. Please make
sure I use this to point to each word to stay with the story. Our books should be brought back each day to
exchange and read with the teacher.
Reminders
Our volunteer site is
up and running. Please sign up if you
can!!
Parent teacher
interviews are October 25 in the evening and October 26th. Please stayed tuned for sign up times.
Please make sure you are practicing your popcorn words!! A new list will be coming soon!!
